The importance of additional education
Today nobody counts on spending his/her entire work life at a single job. Willy-nilly, you will have to face career changes. The changes may be positive and inspiring if you manage them actively.
Active career management definitely involves keeping up to date with most recent happenings in your profession, but without the use of foreign languages and knowledge about basic computer applications nobody can be a genuine professional nowadays.
In general, knowledge and skills are more appreciated than your diploma today. Moreover, the capability of prompt knowledge and skill acquisition is much more important.
The quality and amount of professional knowledge is not enough any more today. Coping with (any) everyday task requires a scope of knowledge and interests, knowledge of foreign languages and active use of computer applications. Employers are not 'looking for' persons who possess those skills any more: they expect everybody who is actively looking for a job to be like that!
The results of the survey conducted by Selection Ltd. for Human Potential Management among Croatian employers suggest that motivation and initiative, flexibility and adaptability are in general considered as the most important qualities in the selection process!
Motivation implies willingness to learn actively, desire to keep up to date, and capability to suggest business process improvements. It is impossible to achieve this if the problem is approached from the professional standpoint only. When you apply for a desired job vacancy advertisement, the employer will positively evaluate your additional education not only as a confirmation of your knowledge that will be important for good job performance, but also as a confirmation of your motivation and ambition.
- Use any educational opportunity
- Do not refuse education in the fields not directly related to your position or narrow speciality
- Find courses of your interest and explain to your employer the use of an employee who possesses the knowledge that could be obtained from them
- Keep up to date with new achievements in the field of your speciality
- Use your free time to learn new computer skills and find ways how to use them at work
- Learn foreign languages
Your interest in any additional education will be a confirmation to your employer that you are a motivated and ambitious employee. As suggested by the employer survey, this is exactly what is being asked from you!
